Avoid Uber’s new 1.5% fee with this quick tip Inbox Wise (formerly TransferWise) May 9, 2025,
Save when using Uber abroad with your Wise card
Using Uber when you travel abroad? They’ve recently introduced a new 1.5% fee that could make your rides more expensive.
However, by adding your Wise card to Uber and making a quick change to your settings, you can avoid this fee and save on inflated exchange rates.
Here’s what you need to know
You’ll be charged the new fee if you’re making a trip to the US, Canada, or a country that uses the Euro, from abroad. When you book a ride, Uber will automatically convert the price and charge you in your home currency — then add their 1.5% fee on top. This will affect you if your home currency is GBP, USD, CAD or EUR.
For example, if your home currency is EUR and you take a ride in New York, Uber will convert the price from USD into EUR at their own exchange rate and add their 1.5% fee on top.
How to save and avoid Uber’s new fee
1. Add your Wise card to your Uber account
• Open your Uber app • Go to ‘Account’ and then ‘Wallet’ • Tap ‘Add payment method’ and enter your Wise card details
2. Change your settings to avoid Uber’s new 1.5% fee
• Go to your ‘Wallet’ in the Uber app • Tap ‘Set preferred currency’* • Select ‘Always pay in the local currency’
